Little Girl Wristlets - Fingerless Mittens


Little Girl Wristlets

Ages 6-10

1 skein Koigu Painter’s Palette (if you knit a longer cuff section, you may need more yarn)

US3 (3.25mm) double point needles

Optional – Size F (3.75mm) crochet hook and small charms for decoration

Gauge: not too important

Abbreviatons:

CO – Cast on

K – knit

P – purl

M1 – create an increase by lifting the ‘ladder’ between the two stitches in the row below, from the front with the left needle and knitting into the back of this lifted bar (new stitch will look twisted).

Rnd – round

BO – Bind off

Note: These wristlets are knit in the round.


CO 44 onto 3 double pointed needles. Distribute stitches thusly: 16 on the first needle, 12 on the second needle, 16 on the third needle. Join into a circle – be careful not to twist; mark beginning of round.


K2, P2 until tube measures 4 inches (or desired length of cuff)


Thumb Gusset:

Rnd 1: K2, P1, M1, P1, continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnds 2 and 3: K2, P1, K1, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnd 4: K2, P1, M1, K1, M1, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnds 5 and 6: K2, P1, K3, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnd 7: K2, P1, M1, K3, M1, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnds 8 and 9: K2, P1, K5, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnd 10: K2, P1, M1, K5, M1, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnds 11 and 12: K2, P1, K7, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnd 13: K2, P1, M1, K7, M1, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnds 14 and 15: K2, P1, K9, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnd 16: K2, P1, M1, K9, M1, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnds 17 and 18: K2, P1, K11, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnd 19: K2, P1, M1, K11, M1, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Rnds 20 and 21: K2, P1, K13, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.

Next Rnd: K2, P1, slide the next 13 stitches onto a stitch holder or piece of yarn, P1; continue in K2P2 rib around.


Continue in the K2P2 rib until desired hand length (1.5 to 2.5 inches). Bind off Hand.


Thumb: Knit the 13 thumb stitches with the double point needles, distribute stitches evenly on 3 needles – continuing in the round – picking up and knitting one extra stitch between the two purl stitches that were joined back together after the thumb gusset was completed. Knit in stockinette for about .5 to 1 inch (or desired length. Bind off thumb.


Options: Using crochet hook, work a single crochet border (or whatever kind of border that pleases you) on the cuff, hand and thumb edges. Sew small charms on each to decorate.

  1. Cute! Granny makes some similar too them-except she crotchets instead of knits. I like them cause you can still feel what you're doing-but stay warm too : )
